Research Webquest

WebQuest Name:____________________
Date:_____________________
Subject: English
Professor: Janet Takemoto

Introduction: Welcome! Hopefully this webquest will lessen some of the anxiety and apprehension experienced during the research process.
Task: The English department requires that every student taking a senior level 2 English class will be responsible to complete one research paper during the course of the year. Our paper will be based both on scholarly material which we have explored in class as well as material which you will research and develop on your own. You will be required to formulate a clear thesis statement (argument) which you will prove by incorporating relevant research information which you develop for this purpose. You will use critical and scholarly materials as your sources of information. Some of these materials may, in fact, contradict your thesis statement; however, it is important to address all sides of an issue.
Process: Steps to choosing your topic – this is not a thesis statement: • Choose one work (short story, play or poem) from our new anthology. This piece of literature must be something we are not reading in class during the first semester – I will give you a list of these works. • Your choice must be approved by Mrs. T. before you can begin your work. • You will read whatever it is that you have chosen. • After you have had your choice approved, you will research the following: o The author of the literature – many times we can find reasons why authors have written a particular work based on facts from their personal life or cultural background. o The work itself – you will find criticism for the story/poem/play which relates to the item you have chosen. o You will locate and read another piece of literature by the same author or another piece of literature which has some connection to your author/work.

Evaluation: Paper Specifics:  4 – 5 pages in length – in other words it must completely fill 4 or more pages but not more than 5.25 pages (not including your works cited page).  MLA format is required for all in-text citations, page numbering, heading, spacing and works cited.  Your paper must have a title but remember that a title is never bold, big, or underlined or quoted.  You will cite a minimum of 5 different sources in your paper. These will consist of our anthology and four other sources two of which must be from one of our media center databases and the other two from a .org, .edu, or .gov. site only – 2 print resources can be substituted.  You will use Times New Roman font, size 12 normal only.  Your paper must be stapled before it comes to class.  You will use one inch margins on top, bottom, and both sides.  In order to receive a grade, your paper must be submitted to both Turnitin.com along with another copy to me in class on the due date.
Conclusion: You will be required to comment on your paper and the process by using our classroom wiki set up for this purpose. Hopefully, we will all be able to help each other with the process.
